General Questions:

WHY BEQUEATH TO EFFECTIVE CHARITIES?
If you were born in a developed country then you’ve very likely won the cosmic lottery, ending up within the wealthiest few percent of the world’s population. (If you don’t believe us, try plugging your details into this calculator. It might change the way you look at the world.) This means that you have an incredible opportunity to do a huge amount of good.

Now let’s do some math. Here's what a donation of $10,000 (USD) to flagship charity evaluator GiveWell’s top charities could achieve.

  • Donating to the Against Malaria Foundation, a distributor of long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets, would save the lives of three people. That’s the most cost-effective way to save lives according to rigorous scientific evidence.
  • Donating to GiveWell-recommended deworming charities, which work to secure the large scale implementation of government deworming programs, could rid 8,000 people of compromising intestinal parasites for a year. Research suggests deworming could be the most cost-effective method to improve school attendance and adult wages. In fact, deworming is 50 times more effective than scholarships at increasing school attendance.
  • A donation to GiveDirectly would give 10 people a gift of up to three times their annual salary. These well-studied cash transfers have been shown to dramatically improve the lives of recipients. Head on over to GiveDirectly’s website to find out more.

Let’s not sugarcoat it—the problems of our world are massive. Although a bequest may be small in comparison, it would make a tangible difference in the lives of others. By utilizing our services, you can easily make a donation to GiveWell’s top charities in your estate planning. Once you’re done, consider talking to your family and friends to see if they would be interested in doing the same.
WHY BEQUEATH TO GIVEWELL INSTEAD OF A SPECIFIC EFfECTIVE CHARITY?
Firstly, for GiveWell and all of its partners, 100% of your bequest is put towards effective charities!

When you donate to GiveWell, they can earmark your donation for redistribution to whatever the most effective charities happen to be at any given time. We will provide you with all information you need to ensure this is the case.

We ask that bequests to GiveWell remain unspecified instead of allocating to specific GiveWell-recommended charities, as it is difficult to say whether a specific charity will still be as impactful in the future when a will is executed. Since GiveWell (and partner organizations) announce top-ranked charities annually, there’s more guarantee that your bequest will go to the most effective causes.
Why are different organizations RECOMMENDED in different countries?
Most generally prefer bequeathing to a charity that is registered in their own country for tax deductibility reasons. This is not required, but usually preferable. Unfortunately GiveWell is only a registered charity in the US.

Thankfully, GiveWell works very closely with international organizations who will redistribute funds to the same effective charities. In the UK, for example, bequeathing to the Giving What We Can Trust will ensure that gifts are used in the most effective way possible. Effective Altruism Australia will distribute funds for Australian donors, and Canadian donors can donate through us, Charity Science.

We provide specific instructions for how you should bequeath in the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia. If you are estate planning in another country, please feel free to email [email protected] and we’ll provide you with information about how best to bequeath to the world’s most effective charities.
